Brit Card U-Turn Looks Likely

Keir Starmer has reportedly backed plans to scrap the compulsory identity scheme for workers, the original decision was roundly disliked across all parties anyway.

The plans were thrown into confusion yesterday after The Times reported ministers were rowing back on the compulsory element, allowing other digital documents to be used for right-to-work check.

The idea behind the so called ‘Brit Card’ was partially to stop illegal working across England and the rest of the UK, as well as to reduce fraud. My previous article goes into detail about this ridiculous proposal.

The right-to-work check will still be mandatory using other forms of I.D. for verification instead.

A government spokesperson said: “Digital ID will make everyday life easier for people, ensuring public services are personal, joined-up and effective, while also remaining inclusive”.

But it looks as if the ‘mandatory’ part will be dropped, the spokesperson used the phrase ‘joined-up’ which is more than the decision makers writing probably is.

Opinion

This was always an ill thought out power grab from Starmer and who ever else thought that the British public would just sit back and go along with it as well as the opposing parties bowing down.

There is so little trust in the current government and the idea that they would introduce at Digital ID just for workers was never believable. That would be the beginning and where it would end up is anybody’s guess, let’s hope we don’t find out.
